The Institute for Environmental Solutions (IES), founded in 2008, is a multidisciplinary team of scientists, researchers, and innovators. IES creates solutions for sustainable natural resource management by combining practical experience, scientific approaches, and cutting-edge technologies. We address issues that farmers, foresters, municipalities, decision-makers and policymakers, and nature conservation organizations face daily. In the space domain, IES specializes in Earth Observation and the development of data-driven services. IES is a Copernicus Relay and a Copernicus Academy, and a regular supplier to ESA.

TECHNOLOGIES AND COMPETENCES

IES has a practical experience and theoretical knowledge in biology, chemistry, physics, agronomy, ICT, forestry, water management, project management, entrepreneurship, and innovation. IES integrates data sets from a wide range of sensors deployed on satellites, aircrafts, drones, and in-situ to develop data-driven nature management services. In addition, IES uses acoustic sensors, thermal camera traps, GPS collars and tags, soil sensors, ground-penetrating radar, and other data sources to better understand natural environments. Machine-learning and artificial intelligence, as well as GIS, are used to analyze the data. IES has also created a cutting-edge analytical chemistry lab.

PRODUCTS AND SERVICES IN SPACE

  • EO and other data-based products and services to support local and regional planning.
  • EO and other data-based products and services to support forest management.
  • EO and other data-based products and services to support smart and sustainable farming.
  • EO data-based service for water quality monitoring of lakes and large waterbodies.
  • Simulation of future satellite data with a unique airborne hyperspectral remote sensing system.

EQUIPMENT

  • Airborne hyperspectral remote sensing system. The system integrates eight mutually operable sensors providing high spectral and spatial resolution data on the terrestrial, marine and water ecosystems, their physical and chemical characteristics. The system acquires 454 spectral bands simultaneously in a spectral range from 280 to 12000nm.
  • IoT sensor network (motion-activated camera traps, acoustic sensor network, GPS transmitters, etc.), drones, aircrafts. Analytical chemistry lab – HPLC, qTOF, GC-MS, HS-GC, MPAES.

MAJOR SPACE PROJECTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

  • SentiRice: Sentinel data-based support tool for sustainability certification of rice fields
  • Human Habitat: Human settlement pattern modelling – support tool for rural development planning
  • SentiGrass: Assessment of grassland quality and quantity parameters and management activities using Sentinel 1 and 2 data
  • SentiLake: Sentinel-2 service for regular water quality monitoring in lakes

CURRENT AND TARGET PARTNERSHIP

  • Profile of the main customers: B2B segment, innovators, and early adapters of industries such as forestry, agriculture, local & regional planning, smart cities, nature protection, transport & mobility, insurance.
  • Partners IES is looking for: Organizations from the public and private sectors that want to develop and test new data-driven solutions, as well as work with IES to develop and implement ESA and EU program projects.
